Many of us were trained to “show up spiritually” with the right words. Spiritual direction is an invitation to practice the opposite: show up as you are.
Three gentle ways to prepare
- Notice what’s loud. What keeps resurfacing this month? A decision? A grief? A fear? A longing?
- Notice what’s tender. Where do you feel brittle, defensive, ashamed, or raw?
- Notice what’s alive. Even if it’s small: a moment of beauty, a sudden gratitude, a sense of being carried.
A simple prayer to bring
“Jesus, help me tell the truth—gently. Help me listen—bravely. Meet me with love.”
What not to do
- Don’t try to “have progress.”
- Don’t censor your doubts.
- Don’t turn it into a performance review with God.
Spiritual direction is practice in belovedness. You are not auditioning. You are learning to be with God in real life.
